AN INTEGRATED VISUAL ART AND SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
Artist in Residence, Lake View High School -- Esther Charbit
1. Students view examples of "art as social commentary" from the 14th to the 19th century.
2. Students view examples of "art as social commentary" from the early 20th century to the present.
3. Students discuss violence in our society and write of an incident where violence affected their lives.
4. Students are visited by Mrs. Milsap, whose son was a victim of a street shooting, and a discussion ensues.
5. Students view a video documenting the art of Leon Golub.
6. Students are asked to start collecting images to be used in their murals about "non-violence".
7. Students view a video documenting 'A History of Violence In America".
8. Students are divided into groups of 5 or 6 students to begin working on ideas for their murals.
9. Students view slides to prepare them for their visit to the Terra Museum of Art to view the exhibit on "Artist As Social Critic".
10. Students visit the Terra Museum of American Art
11. Students begin drawing and painting their murals.
