Community College Team

Faculty members from Northeastern Illinois University, Truman College, and Wright College have begun working to disseminate the freshman/sophomore cohort model at Northeastern to Chicago City Colleges. Additionally, the institutions have started looking at standards in an effort to align curricula and recruit future teachers from among City College students.

Having established a model for team-teaching (Learning Communities) and developing student cohorts at Northeastern, university faculty have begun to team with City College faculty to replicate the model. The purpose is to 1) disseminate and institutionalize the model to partner institutions; 2) facilitate the seamless articulation of City College students transferring to complete a 4-year program; 3) recruit future teachers to work in Chicago’s high need schools. This recruitment is also looking to City Colleges as a way to increase the diversity of future teachers (see Recruitment Team); 4) insure qualty and focused field and clinical experiences in the freshman and sophomore years.

For dissemination and institutionalization, facilitation meetings have been conducted to interface and share syllabi and course descriptions. With regard to articulation, writing and math faculty members have looked at local, state, NCATE and national standards. These efforts have resulted in a standards’ analysis report for IPLP, Northeastern, and the City Colleges, recommending the best way to teach and assess college level writing. Similarly, training courses are being developed for ongoing professional development. Math teams are currently developing new content courses, including those that link math and science.

Beyond the syllabi, data collection includes information on cohort students’ GPAs, number of credits completed, and retention. Additionally, interviews have been suggested for following up with both teachers and students. The teachers will be asked about their collaborations and students about their participation in the cohorts.

Future evaluation will continue the examination of articulation and gather data from students who transfer from the 2- to 4-year institutions to complete a degree in Education as a result of the IPLP.
