Faculty Professional Development
The Faculty Professional Development (FPD) working group is comprised of senior level faculty from several academic departments at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU). FPD group members include the chair of the Educational Leadership and Development Department and the chair of the Speech and Performing Arts Department.
The FPD group’s primary objective is to assist NEIU faculty develop the professional skills necessary for designing and teaching restructured courses that result from the IPLP grant. The FPD worked toward this objective by holding multiple professional development sessions for NEIU faculty from IPLP working groups. These sessions trained faculty to: 1. Team-teach successfully; 2. Establish and maintain learning communities that included faculty, staff, and students; and 3.Design and deliver instruction in effective, inquiry based student-oriented fashions, 4. Technology, 5. Diversity, 6 Research
In an effort to evaluate its work, the Faculty Professional Development group administered questionnaires after each training session.
Data from these questionnaires reveal that more interactive training is necessary in order to create effective faculty teaching teams. Moreover, creating learning communities is a labor- and time-intensive process requiring substantial support from existing university infrastructure and administration.
As a result of these findings, the FPD team has now transformed itself into the NEIU IPLP Leadership Council and now includes the Dean and Associate Dean of CAS, Dean and Associate Dean of COE. This council recognizes that university infrastructure and administration will be critical variables in the effort to institutionalize IPLP activities at NEIU. The leadership council is currently convening in order to establish an agenda for its work during the remainder of the IPLP grant.
