Recruitment Team for the General Education Cohort
The General Education Recruitment Team is comprised of faculty and staff from Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) academic departments and the NEIU-affiliated Chicago Teachers’ Center. Additional recent Recruitment groups not reported here are 1) the El Centro pilot for immigrants who were teachers or college graduates in their countries of origin (The El Centro pilot is a specialized emersion support in preparation for the Illinois Test of Basic Skills.) and 2) a Junior College recruitment team into the College of Education.
The General Education recruitment team attracts and screens potential students for an early cohort experience in the Northeastern Illinois University College of Education. The general education cohort is comprised of up to 60 incoming freshman students who take classes together and participate in early clinical experiences designed to prepare them for seamless entry into a teacher certification program in the College of Education. The recruitment team conducts a number of activities designed to attract qualified students for the general education cohort. These activities are centered in high need communities with high need schools (as specified by the IPLP grant), and include: 1. Outreach to high school students through guidance counselors, college-bound programs, and bridge programs; and 2. Outreach to returning adult students through business contacts and community organizations. The recruitment team also has developed an interview protocol that it uses to screen applicants for admission to the cohort program.
The recruitment team compiles demographic data on all students accepted to the general education cohort program. These data will be utilized to determine whether cohort participants are representative of the high need schools and communities targeted by the IPLP grant.
Furthermore, the recruitment team plans to collect data on retention and persistence to determine whether cohort participants enter teacher certification programs, graduate from teacher certification programs, and ultimately find teaching positions in high need schools.
The recruitment team expects that these current and future evaluation activities will establish the need for an active and institutionalized general education cohort recruitment process. The team intends to spur such institutionalization by refining its selection criteria for cohort students and creating a general education cohort student handbook.
