Video Cases for Student Learning: Teachscape

Greg Schrader (Northwestern University) has collaborated with faculty from NEIU to introduce Teachscape reflective technology into pre-service and P-8 classrooms in the CPS

Teachscape is a series of web delivered video teaching episodes showing teachers and children doing various reading and writing activities. Program includes lesson plans, alignment to state standards, links to related professional articles, and Teachscape consultants who comment on the lesson outcomes, with discussion room. See: www.teachscape.com

Spring 2001 introduced course modules into ELED, ECED and Reading courses at NEIU. Dr. Greg Schrader, and two resource staff assisted in getting the technical issues resolved and participated in the course delivery using Teachscape. A research study was initiated on the reflection of students in Reading Methods classes and faculty began to develop a 2 part rubric for reflection. Fall 2001 classroom discussion and clinical interview videotapes were coded for reflection.

It appeared that both content knowledge and ped. reflection increased across the term. Students rated the Teachscape experience highly, and noted ways it helped them make connections to classroom teaching. Many of them do not see 'exemplary models' in their clinical classrooms, so they saw this as a way of seeing in action the research/best practices they had read about.
