Cynthia P. Gehrie, Ph.D. vdf19@msn.com Cynthia Porter Gehrie, Ph.D. (Northwestern University) creates research, evaluation and public education projects as an urban ethnographer using holistic observation techniques and video documentation. Work products include research/evaluation reports, videographs, video programs, Internet sites, and publications. Dr. Gehrie was the methodologist in The Urban Principal research project at University of Illinois -- Chicago (National Institute of Education) and co-author of the book Principals in Action, The Reality of Managing Schools(1984). Other publications include articles in educational journals: The Journal of Youth and Adolescence, and Phi Delta Kappan and The Elementary School Journal, Educational Theory and Educational Studies. She established research protocols and video interview prompts with Bob Stake for The University of Illinois - Champaign study of Chicago school principals featuring in-service training for teachers in Math and Science instruction, Illinois Institute of Technology. These are featured in The Teachers Academy Principals Study.(1999) Over 90 videographs include projects for The Nature Conservancy Illinois Field Office, The Kohl Children's Museum, The Chicago Teachers' Center, The Annenberg Foundation, The Gold Star Families -- Chicago Police Department, the McBride, Baker and Coles law firm, The National Forest Service, Lake Forest Open Lands, Openlands - Chicago, The Save the Prairie Society, The California Women's Agenda, The Stanley Foundation (Iowa), Women's Intercultural Network (Uganda), Luna Nueva (Mexico), NONA Center for Multi Media (Zagreb, Croatia), Church Women United (New York City), McCosh Even Start (Northeastern Illinois University) and other local Chicago organizations featuring arts education, environmental education, creative and women's projects and videography as a tool for evaluation and research. Currently she is combining staff development and video documentation/evaluation for three early childhood literacy grants with Hull House Association, a Chicago Community Trust grant through Northeastern Illinois University and a Department of Education Early Reading First grant through Northeastern Illinois University. She is external evaluator using quantitative and qualitative methods for Arts Impacting Achievement, Beacon Street Gallery - a research grant with the US Department of Education documenting the impact of arts integration on student achievement. She is founder and Director of Video Documentation Partnership.
